Children have been planting runner beans, observing how shoots emerge after a few days of watering plants and then watching how the seedling continues to grow with the stem getting taller and many leaves appearing. They have learnt about the vital role roots play in helping plants grow strong. They read ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’, ‘Jasper’s Beanstalk’ and drew the runner bean plants.
“Add water and put the bean in there.”
“Plant beans. Put soil in the pots and the bean and then the water.”
“Need to water to make them grow.”
“First put the soil in. Bean next.”
“A runner bean, we planted it. It will turn into a beanstalk.”
“More soil on top. Water and sun too because they help the bean grow tall.”
“I planted beanstalks in my small garden.”
“The seedlings are growing in the bed.”
“It is a green plant and a big stick and my plant grows all the way up. I can climb up.”
“It grows straight and then it doesn’t fall down.”
“The plant grows around the stick. The roots help them stand up.”
“This beanstalk is the tallest”
“This is a plant. The spiders come and eat the plant at night time.”
“Beanstalk seeds, plant it with water, wait a long time and it will grow too.”
“I draw a beanstalk and a sunflower kitty. They stay in the ground.”
“It can grow and can eat wiggly worms and it is very tall. It touches the sky.”
“The snails like to eat it and it’s called a beanstalk. It’s so good.”
“This beanstalk looks like the one mummy is growing at home with me.”
