Autumn season continues to provide wonderful opportunities for rich sensory play experiences from crunchy leaves to conkers and pumpkins. Children love reciting the poem ‘Leaves are Falling’ whilst collecting autumn leaves, sticks and twigs. Children have drawn and painted pictures of sticks, stems and leaves. They’ve done colourful leaf rubbings and made leaf collages.
“It’s so windy, the leaves are blowing.”
“These leaves have wings. They’re spinning.”
“Leaves are falling, leaves are falling, one fell on my nose.”
“Yellow, orange, red! I want a red leaf.”
“Rain is falling, rain is falling. I saw a rain drop falling from the leaf.”
“In the water we can see ourselves.”
“You can see the tree in the water.”
“That’s the tree trunk. Somebody cut the branch off the tree.”
“We will protect the tree.”
“Let’s cut the pumpkin.”
“The skin is so hard. Inside it’s soft. Pumpkin seeds.”
“The pumpkins grow in Autumn like a beanstalk. It grows like my plant at home.”
“We’ve both got rain boots and you have as well.”
“Autumn. Leaves fall down in autumn.”
“Look! A squirrel.”
“Wear a helmet, nuts can fall on your head. Squirrels drop them.”
