A few parents came in to style their children’s hair because children in Rainforest have been so involved in role-play around hairdressing. We talked about how we look after our hair by washing, conditioning, combing and brushing our hair. We watched ‘Hair Love’ on you-tube and read the story “My Hair” by Hannah Lee. We learnt about differing hair lengths and textures as well as different hairstyles such as ponytails, twists, braids and plaits. Children also decided to draw their hair by drawing self-portraits.
One parent told us how her daughter chooses her hairstyle based on her favourite character.
“Have you got a hair clip?”
“I have a head band, it keeps my hair from my eyes so that I can see.”
“Look at my hair, I’ve got bunches in it. Mummy ties it for me.”
“I have a pony tail. Can you find a headband?”
“My mummy combs my hair too.”
“I can do my hair by myself.”
“I’ve never been to the hairdresser. My mummy goes to the hairdresser.”
“My daddy has a moustache.”
“My daddy has a beard.”
“My daddy goes to the barber to shave his hair. He has short hair.”
“First, do a long ponytail and then that’s that.”
“My mummy cut my hair, wash my hair, brush my hair.”
“Plait, plait, plait, plait.”
“I do a ponytail here, 2 little clips here and so many plaits.”
“She has twists in her hair.”
