Parents have been coming in this week to style their children’s hair. Children learnt about different hairstyles including twists, braids and plaits. They practised twisting hair and got to further fine tune their skills when twisting some pipe cleaners together. They also threaded beads and buttons through pipe cleaners. They drew from their own life experiences during role-play based on hairdressers whilst using props such as afro combs, brushes, shower heads and hair dryers. Children enjoyed watching the short animation ‘Hair Love’ as well as listening to the story ‘My Hair’ by Hannah Lee. Such rich learning has been great way for all children to celebrate who they are. This week children also drew their self-portraits with some including their hairstyles.
“I’ve got a yellow flower hair clip. My daddy did my hair. These are flowers on my jumper to match my hair. They’re on my trousers too.”
“My mummy plaited my hair.”
“My dad can’t do hair because he hasn’t practised. My mum does it because she practises.”
“I had a haircut. My daddy told me to go to the haircut shop. The hairdresser cut my hair with the thing that goes over my head.”
“I have brown eyes with brown hair.”
“My daddy has short hair. I have hair the same like you. From the back, mummy twists my hair then mummy put beads in my hair.”
“My hair is yellow like my nanny’s.”
“I like my hair brown everywhere.”
“Plaits, plaits, plaits!”
“Mummy wash my hair to clean it and she combs and brushes my hair.”
“My mummy dries my hair with a hairdryer and it’s so noisy!”
“I have long hair and my brother has short hair.”
