Children have been reading and reciting the story ‘Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?’ by Bill Martin and Eric Carle.
They’ve enjoyed this highly repetitive story, especially when using claves to beat rhythmically along to it. Their memory recall has grown each time they re-read the story along with their confidence to sequence the book’s characters such as the different coloured animals. Children are also learning to sign along to the story using Makaton gestures.
‘Brown bear, brown bear, what do you see?’
‘I see a red bird looking at me.’
‘The brown bear has really sharp nails.’
‘Bears’ claws are sharp and they can scratch.’
‘Brown bears live in caves. Polar bears live in cold places.’
‘The polar bears slide on the ice.’
I’ve got the cat. I’ve got the cat.’
‘Can I have red bird?’
‘I see a bird.’
‘Bird flying up in the sky, high, high, high.’
‘Red bird has big wings.’
‘Quack! quack! I see a yellow duck. Where’s the mummy duck?’
‘Goldfish, goldfish, what do you see?’
‘Goldfish swim in water.’
‘I went to the zoo and I saw a crocodile.’
‘Snap, snap, snap.’
